Thames Yacht Club (TYC) is another all volunteer run club, like HYC. (But with food concession and launch). It is located on the west side of Thames River in New London, CT. 2 miles south of Amtrak and ferry. It is protect from all but South East to North East, and no great fetch from unprotected, as well.

David was picking up crew coming by train from Maine and called about short stay or overnight if weather was poor and the folks at TYC were very accommodating. The Commodore called back and suggested David come to dock. Then gave them a ride to Defender Marine and for other provisions. Good restaurant within walking distance. Grocery, etc. taxi or free ride as we got, by chance.

They let them stay on dock overnight. (“No problem, it’s the end of the season.”) And when David asked about burgee exchange, the Commodore pulled a burgee out of his jacket pocket. I said, “We have to have a photo.”

TYC proves to be an excellent lay over spot anytime. In summer, mooring available if member is away. In fall, very relaxed. David would have been pleased to pay $25 for a mooring (as stated on Active Captain.)  All the extras were quite appreciated.

David mentioned our HYC guest moorings.

If you are lucky, you may get to see a US submarine go past. Unfortunately, on and out, David missed but heard about them on VHF just before and after our transit.

    Next time!

HYC encourages its members to exchange burgees with other yacht clubs they visit.
