Youth Regatta Results and Wrap Up

As you’ve probably seen and heard, this year’s Youth Regatta was another example of what makes HYC so special. Hosting 91 boats, 117 sailors with their coaches and some parents, we had a small army of volunteers who made it all happen. Here’s a brief rundown of everyone’s contributions, many of which began in the weeks prior to the Regatta.

• Brenda Collins and Carol Hudson greeted the sailors on Thursday morning with breakfast.
• Denley Poor and Susan McCracken ran the registration table, while Jeb McCarty and Tom Tobey directed the flow of cars, trucks and boat trailers as the sailors arrived to unload, launch and prepare for the competition.
• Cynthia Selinger and Karen Bikulcius made and delivered bag lunches for everyone.
• With a delayed harbor start, Bob Grout piloted Jack Thomas’s “Dark & Stormy” as the 420/ Laser RC boat put out to the bay with Frank Pizzo and his crew.
• Finn Hadlock and Cliff George handled the 420/ Laser marks; Max Jennings and myself tended the marks for the Optimist course.
• Sarah Kent with help from Claire Henry, directed the Optimist course RC work (60 boats!).
• Peter McCracken, John Lincoln and the Prices’ provided parents and friends with boats to watch the action.
• Meanwhile back at the club, Tim Baker caught up on his summer reading while handling the scoring as the results were called in.
• Beth Ahearn joined Julie Freund, Kristen Bailey, Peg Willauer, Sandi Goolden, Susan Martling, Romey Brown, June Chomyn, Cindy Burroughs and others in serving up a great lasagna dinner for all the competitors after the races on Thursday evening.
• On Thursday night, the Prices’s, Stephanie Paine, Vicki Smith and Pat Phillips hosted sailors from Christmas Cove and Boothbay.
• Mabel Gerquist helped Sue Jennings put on breakfast Friday morning.
• The 420/ Laser Race Committee crew got additional help on Friday from Bob Santomena and Tom & Kevin Schwarm.
• Sue Hadlock hosted a gang of parents and friends spectating on “Tangent” as did the Peter and Weezie on “Big Dog Party”
• Anne & Rob Fuehrer, Cindy & Spencer Drake, June Chomyn, Pat Nash, Pat Phillips and Katie Siemen arrived on the scene with Carter Becker on the “Barge”. Their collective efforts resulted in another fantastic post-race, on-the -water cookout. As I heard one young sailor say to another on Friday morning “….the best darn hamburger you’ll ever have.”

Many thanks to all who helped the sailors haul and pack their boats and gear – and especially those that cleaned up the Club afterwards. Also, much appreciation to Frank Pizzo and all the Instructors!
I’m sure I’ve overlooked several dozen, my apologies.

New Classes for the Sailing Program

We are offering two new classes in addition to the classes we offered last summer (Recruits, Mates, Skippers, 420 Race) including an Opti Race class and a Guppies Program. The Opti Race Class will be for 10-15 year olds that want to race and compete in the Optimist Dinghy. The class will run from 1-4:30, Monday-Friday. The Guppies Program will take place on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 for 6 and 7 year olds that are eager to learn how to sail. The Guppies Program will introduce sailors to the Optimist Dinghy while gaining these sailors comfort and confidence on the water. Both should be great additions to our other wonderful sailing classes. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me with any questions. Your HYC Board has asked me to create a Facebook fan page for our club in order to attract new youth to the sailing program, encourage participation in racing and to serve as another medium to get news out about the club. Sailing Program Complete

Summer is over and the Sailing Program is now complete. All would agree that this summers program had a lot of success and some fantastic weather for a change. Here is an overview of Session One that Director Frank Pizzo has but together: First Session HYC. Thank you to all of the Instructors and Members that made it a wonderful safe summer for the kids!

2010 Youth Regatta was a Blast!

The 2010 HYC Youth Regatta and 420 State of Maine Championship was a great time by all involved and it couldn’t have happened without all the enthusiastic help of all of our members and Sailing Instructors! With over 100 junior sailors racing over two days in challenging conditions from fog one day to large wind shifts on the second day the team on two lines was able to get off enough races to allow a throw out. Friday was the highlight with racing completed in time to have our famous Barge Barbecue out on the race course.

Sailing Program gearing up- join us!

Greetings everyone!
The 2010 Youth Sailing Program at HYC will be beginning next Monday with the start of Session 1. As you may have seen at the HYC website, we have a great team of Instructors this year. Headed by our Director, Frank Pizzo, they all gathered this morning to begin planning and gearing up. Enrollment is close to full for the first session with a few more spots to fill for the second session which starts July 19th.

The team is excited to be working with a larger group of Skippers and Racers compared to last year. These Skippers and Racers will be utilizing five new Club 420′s as part of our collective commitment to the Program’s success. Replacing our long-serving fleet of JY15′s, the Club’s older 420′s will be re-rigged as RAD 420′s for teaching the Mates and Recruits. What is a RAD 420? It’s a Club 420 except the mainsail is smaller and the rig controls are simplified. Combined with our fleet of Optimist prams and our skilled Instructors, the goals for sailors in both Recruits and Mates will be met.
On 5-6 August, we’ll be hosting the 6th Annual HYC Youth Regatta which for the second year running, will also be the venue for the 420 State of Maine Championships. There’s going to be a lot going on this summer and we want you to join in and help out.

Please email Frank Pizzo at sailingprogram.hyc@gmail.com, as he and the team need help on several fronts; most immediately with set up chores this week, then, Thursday night races, Big Boat Days, etc.

Bentley and Brenda Collins will be coordinating this year’s Youth Regatta and there will be more details to follow. Please email Bentley at Bentley@sabreyachts.com. This is a big event and the racers’s really enjoy visiting HYC, as you saw in the past few years so join in again!

7/1 Early Registration (by 6pm)
7/9 Registration closes (by 6pm) $20 late fee
7/12 Check-in @ Portland Yacht Services, 4-7pm
7/13 Race Day # 1
7/14 Race Day # 2

Fees:

Optimist = $50
Laser (radial/ full rig) = $50
420 = $100
Registration fee includes two days of racing, regatta t-shirt and lunch both days.
No onsite registration will be accepted.
Sailmaine is limiting the size of the fleets to ensure safe, quality races.
