    Pathways for Sailing Progression

    Enrolled in Recruits:

    Beginner Sailors (8-11):
    Beginner sailors aged 8-11 should join our recruits class. Designed to get students familiar with the basics of sailing, this class teaches safety on the water, rigging, steering, basic trimming, and points-of-sail. The goals of this class are for students to be able to single handedly rig an Opti, safely dock, and sail an upwind course. 
    Example registration: Recruits
    Continuing Sailors (9-11):
    Students aged 9-11 who have successfully been able to single handedly rig an Opti, safely dock, and sail an upwind course are encouraged to join us in the afternoon as well for our Opti Green Team. This class teaches the basic racing rules of sailing and extends the skills of a successful recruit. Motivated students will be given the opportunity to participate in regattas. Participating in recruits concurrently is recommended but not mandatory for this class.

    Continuing Sailors (10-11) & greater than 100lbs:
    Students aged 10-11 and greater than 100lbs can join our mates class in the afternoon as well. This class introduces students to double handed sailing in a Club 420. Sailing basics are reinforced. Participating in recruits concurrently is not mandatory for this class.

    Enrolled in Mates:

    Beginner Sailors (10-15) & greater than 100lbs:
    Beginner sailors aged 10-15 should join our mates class. This class is designed to get students familiar with the basics of sailing a double handed dinghy including safety, docking, rigging, basic trimming, steering, and points of sail.

    Continuing Sailors (10-15) & greater than 100lbs:
    Continuing students aged 10-15 who have mastered the basics of double handed sailing are encouraged to join us in the morning for our ATG class as well. This class is designed to give successful mates an opportunity to extend their skills with spinnakers, trapezes, sonars, navigation, and the basic racing rules of sailing. This class meets concurrently with the 420 Race Team to expose students to some of the best sailors at HYC.

    Continuing and Racing:

    Continuing Sailors (13-17):
    Students aged 13-15 who wish to move on from mates are encouraged to join our Sonar Cruise class in the afternoon. Students will be taught skills in seamanship and navigation as well as be given the opportunity to participate in HYC’s Wednesday Night Series.
    Example registration: ATG & Sonar Cruise
    Racing Sailors (9-15):
    Students aged 9-15 who are interested in racing should join our Opti Race Team. Starting in Green Fleet, these sailors will work their way up the fleets, building their skills in the great sport of sailing.

    Racing Sailors (10-15) & greater than 100lbs:
    Experienced racers aged 10-15 & greater than 100 lbs who are enrolled in Opti Race Team are encouraged to join ATG in the morning as well to further their education.

    Racing Sailors (12-17) with approval ∧ greater than 100lbs:
    Students who have learned the basics of racing in ATG and want to compete in regattas are highly encouraged to join the 420 Race Team. This class meets all day and teaches students mastery in all skills they’ve learned so far as well as advanced racing tactics and maneuvers.
