  • HYC is Hiring for the Summer of 2025!


    Coaches & Instructors:

    Harraseeket Yacht Club (HYC) is looking for motivated and enthusiastic instructors of all levels including 420 and Opti Race coaches for the upcoming 2025 Summer Sailing Season. HYC is located in South Freeport ME and our learn to sail and racing program serves approximately 140 sailors. We primarily teach on 420s and Opti’s, but also have Sonars that can be used by any class.

    Classes run from June 23 to August 15, 2025.  All positions run Mon-Fri from June 13 – August 17, 2025. We know that school schedules vary and can discuss necessary accommodations.

    Responsibilities include preparation of daily lesson plans for classroom and on-the-water instruction, per guidelines of the Sailing Program Director. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal skills to work with students, parents, and Club members. They are responsible for supporting a program of safe sailing, hands-on instruction, and fun.  Salaries are competitive.  We will endeavor to locate housing for instructors who are not from the area.
    Our instructors teach sailors from ages 6-15, who learn in a group setting, using Opti’s, 420s, and Sonars. 

    Our 420 and Opti Race Coaches are responsible for our 420 and Opti Race Teams, where sailors generally aged 10-17, race as a team and compete at regattas in Maine and Massachusetts.  It is preferred that Race Coaches have US Sailings Small Boat Level 2 Instructor/Coach Certification.

    Certification Requirements: 

    • US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certification
    • First Aid, CPR, & AED
    • Safe Sport
    • NASBLA approved safe boating course


    Coaches and Senior instructors must possess current US Sailing Level One certification.  All instructors must have current First-Aid, CPR, AED, and NASBLA certification and be proficient in chase boat operation.

    HYC will cover/reimburse fees for Level 1 and Level 2 certification upon successful completion of the season.

    Junior Instructors:

    Harraseeket Yacht Club in South Freeport, ME seeks Junior Sailing instructors to join our 2025 Youth Sailing Program (YSP) summer staff.  We are looking for enthusiastic instructors who want to share their love of sailing with children ages 8-15 on our fleet of Opti’s, 420s, and Sonars. Classes run from June 23rd to August 15th. Staff positions from June 13 – August 17, 2025, and are generally Monday to Friday. JIs generally assist with our morning classes. We know that school schedules vary and can discuss necessary accommodations.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Assisting Senior Instructors with lesson plans and teaching 4 two-week sessions.
    • Working with the Program Director to implement safety protocols and sailing curriculum.
    • Assist with general maintenance of sailboats and YSP equipment.
    • Time commitment is approximately 25-30 mornings during the 8 week season, plus prep/orientation week and ending season shut down.

    The successful applicant will:

    • Have a strong background in dinghy sailing
    • Be at least 16
    • Enjoy the challenges and joys of working with children
    • Be capable of general boat maintenance.
    • Pass a background check
    • Have current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or at minimum the ability to acquire such certification by the first class
    • Have completed US Sailing’s Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals Online (TCFO) course. A level 1 certification is preferred
    • Ability to work on a team
